“Don’t do ‘this’ if you’re in your 40s or older”… Hair loss prevention topic

As interest in hair loss prevention methods increases, experts have advised that if you are over 40, washing your hair every day is not good for hair loss prevention.

Osang Kwon, a professor of dermatology at Seoul National University College of Medicine, said this in an interview with YTN Newsrider on the 30th in response to a question about hair loss and the frequency of hair washing, assuming that “there are individual differences.”

Professor Kwon said, “People who secrete a lot of sebum wash their hair twice a day, especially during puberty (when sebum secretion is active). It varies depending on one’s lifestyle or the amount of sebum on the scalp, but in people over 40, the scalp becomes quite dry. “He said.

He explained, “Because being too dry is not good (for hair loss), washing your hair 3 to 4 times a week is enough.”

Regarding the water temperature when washing hair, he said, “Washing with cold water definitely has the effect of stimulating the hair follicles, but it is a little less effective in removing sebum and oil. Therefore, it is better to use lukewarm water.”

Professor Kwon acknowledged that the common belief that hair should be cut rather than pulled out is “true” because there is a limit to the number of hairs that can come out of one hair follicle in a lifetime.

Regarding the effectiveness of commercially available hair loss prevention shampoos and treatment products, he said, “No matter how effective the good ingredients are, when you wash your hair, you lather it up and then immediately wash it off, so (the good ingredients) are washed away.” He added, “It’s better than not using it at all.” “However, it is not as effective as medicine.”

Meanwhile, according to the National Health Insurance Corporation, the number of people suffering from hair loss in Korea is estimated to reach 10 million. Looking at the age of patients with hair loss disease, they were in their 30s (22.6%), 40s (21.7%), 20s (20.0%), and 50s (16.5%). People in their 30s and 40s, as well as people in their 20s, are actively seeking hair loss treatment.
