The club was founded in 1900 by 11 football players, led by Franz John. From 1932 to 1939, Bayern Munich won six German championships. After World War II, the club won its first DFB-Pokal title in 1957. In the 1960s and 1970s, Bayern Munich began to achieve international success, winning the European Cup (now known as the UEFA Champions League) three times in a row from 1974 to 1976, under the captaincy of Franz Beckenbauer.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Bayern Munich continued to be a major force in German and European football, winning the Bundesliga title on 11 occasions and the DFB-Pokal on four occasions. The club also reached the European Cup final in 1987 and 1999.

In 2013, Bayern Munich achieved the treble, winning the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and UEFA Champions League in the same season.
