Israel, which is conducting an operation to eradicate Hamas, claimed to have discovered a tunnel beneath a UN agency in the Gaza Strip.
According to American public radio station NPR on the 10th (local time), the tunnel appears to be located underground at the headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in the Gaza Strip. The tunnel is said to be 700m long and 18m deep, with multiple explosion-proof doors installed.
Israel claims that Hamas hid power equipment here and received electricity from UNRWA. In addition, various information assets of Hamas are hidden here, and there are also documents that could serve as evidence that Hamas used this place.
In addition, the Israeli military explained that various weapons, including rifles, ammunition, grenades, and other explosives, were discovered in some areas of the UNRWA building. Israel is said to have made this situation public by taking foreign reporters directly to the scene.
Israeli Army Major Nir Dinar, who accompanied reporters, said, “It would be very remiss to think that the UNRWA people did not know what was going on beneath their feet,” but added, “Whether they knew it or not, they were victims of the Hamas terrorist organization.”
Regarding this issue, UNRWA representative Philippe Lazarini reportedly stated that he did not know what was under their headquarters. In addition, they explained that their organization vacated the building after receiving an evacuation order from Israel on October 12 last year.
