Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula One world champion, is set to leave Mercedes and embark on a new chapter with Ferrari for the 2025 season.
The seismic shift decision of the Formula One world follows Hamilton's activation of a release clause in his Mercedes contract, making this season his last with the Silver Arrows.
The announcement came directly from Mercedes, saying, "Lewis has activated a release option in the contract announced last August, and this season will therefore be his last driving for the Silver Arrows."
Hamilton, reflecting on his time with Mercedes, expressed, "I have had an amazing 11 years with this team, and I’m so proud of what we have achieved together."
Ferrari swiftly confirmed the acquisition of the 39-year-old British racing maestro, stressing the multi-year nature of the contract. Lewis Hamilton, set to join forces with Charles Leclerc, had previously explored the possibility of donning the iconic red of Ferrari in 2019.
Mercedes staff were informed in a meeting at their UK headquarters, marking the end of a remarkable era. Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal, acknowledged the inevitable parting, saying, "However, we knew our partnership would come to a natural end at some point, and that day has now come. We accept Lewis’s decision to seek a fresh challenge."
The move raises eyebrows, considering Lewis Hamilton's recent contract extension with Mercedes. The abrupt shift to Ferrari materialised amidst ongoing talks with Carlos Sainz, fueling speculation about a rapid negotiation process.
Hamilton's frustrations over the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where he felt robbed of an eighth title, have been an underlying narrative. The desire to reignite his championship quest is evident in his choice to switch to Ferrari.
Lewis Hamilton, the most successful Formula One driver in F1 history, with 103 wins and 104 pole positions, aims to redefine his legacy with Ferrari. As the news unfolds, the motorsport world braces for a paradigm shift, eagerly anticipating the impact of this unexpected transition on the upcoming season.
In the words of Hamilton, "I am 100% committed to delivering the best performance I can this season and making my last year with the Silver Arrows, one to remember."
