“Who will get married if this happens?”... Average wedding cost in Korea exceeds 300 million won

An analysis found that the average cost of a wedding in Korea exceeds 300 million won. Newlywed housing costs account for 79% of total expenses, but wedding expenses and various incidental expenses are also significant.

On the 3rd, marriage information company Gayeon released the results of a survey titled ‘2024 Wedding Cost Report’. This survey was conducted on 1,000 recently married men and women (married for 5 years or less) through an open survey (confidence level of 80%, sampling error ±2.03% points).

According to the survey results, the average total wedding cost was 304.74 million won, exceeding 300 million won. Among respondents, men earned 327.36 million won and women earned 286.43 million won.

Of the total costs, preparing a newlywed home accounted for the largest portion, amounting to 241.76 million won, or 79% of the total cost. Among respondents, those who lived with their parents or used a company residence or official residence were marked as 0 won.

Marriage expenses were calculated to be an average of 26.15 million won. The average price for a gift was 5.66 million won, a wedding gift was 5.3 million won, and the ‘studio shooting/dress/makeup package’, also known as ‘sudme’, was 4.79 million won. The average wedding hall cost was calculated to be 9.9 million won. The range of answers ranged from 0 won (wedding halls supported by companies and schools) to over 100 million won (hotel wedding halls).

In a group survey by age group, the 40s group had higher rates of wedding gifts and gifts, and the wedding package had higher rates in the 20s group. The average honeymoon cost was 7.44 million won, the average food cost was 1.7 million won, and the average return gift was 1.17 million won.

Regarding the results of this survey, a Gayeon official said, “The average cost is only an average, and in reality, there were many cases where the wedding ceremony, wedding ceremony, etc. were carried out without large expenditures.” He added, “Rather than trying to fill out all the formalities, the bride-to-be, who is the party to the wedding, ·I hope the bride can put her mind together and proceed with the wedding at a reasonable cost.”
